A garage door that only opens halfway becomes a nuisance for many reasons. Quite often, the cause of your door's malfunction is an improperly set garage door limit. This requires a simple turn with a screwdriver to reset the limit so the garage door opens and closes all the way again. Unless you want to climb up on a ladder numerous times, ask someone to operate the door opener’s switch while you make the necessary adjustment.
- Set a safety ladder under the garage door opener. Locate the limit switch adjustment, either on the back of the opener or behind the light bulb’s lens cover. Some models have two screws labeled “Up” and “Down.”
- Turn the “Down” adjustment one full turn counterclockwise. Try to lower the door. For most doors, a complete rotation of the screw allows the door to advance 2 inches.
- Continue to turn the down limit adjustment until the door opens and closes properly. Raise and lower the door completely between each adjustment. It’s best to make the adjustments in small increments so you don’t exceed the limit adjustment and make the door come down too hard.
- Conduct a safety reverse test to make sure the door reopens if someone or something is in the doorway. Open the door, and set a 1-inch block of wood in the center of the doorway directly under the door. Close the door. If the limits are set correctly, the door should come back up automatically when it touches the block of wood.
Tip
If the door continues to malfunction, check the track for obstructions. Lubricate the track with silicone spray or 3-in-1 motor oil. Examine the springs for signs of damage. If the springs show signs of damage, call a repair technician. Working with them can be dangerous.
Examine the garage door’s safety eyes if the door won’t stay down. Clean off any debris. Locate the lights on the eyes. If they aren’t on, loosen the fastener holding one of the safety eyes. Turn the eye until its lights come on again to indicate they are in alignment, and retighten the fastener.
Warning
Repeated operation of the garage door as you make the adjustments may cause the opener to overheat and fail to operate. Wait 15 minutes for the motor to cool before proceeding.
